How it works

The method

Harvest range × local price gives gross planning value. Annualized setup and annual inputs are subtracted; labor is optional and off by default.

Worked example

A $300 raised-bed setup expected to last six years contributes $50 per year before soil, seed, water, or optional labor.

Remember: Garden outputs are planning ranges. Weather, cultivar, soil, pests, sunlight, and care can materially change the result.

Common questions

Before you act on the number

Why is labor optional?

Many people garden partly for recreation. Add a labor value if savings is your primary goal.

Are prices live?

No. Enter your own comparable local price and unit.

Does gardening always save money?

No. Small scale, expensive infrastructure, crop failure, and undervalued labor can all produce a negative result.
