How it works

The method

Gardiv divides usable width into rows and usable length into positions. Offset mode adds an extra position only where half-spacing geometry allows it.

Worked example

A 4 × 4 foot bed with 12-inch spacing in both directions holds about 16 grid positions before a border allowance.

Remember: Garden outputs are planning ranges. Weather, cultivar, soil, pests, sunlight, and care can materially change the result.

Before you act on the number

Is this square-foot gardening?

It can model a square grid, but it also accepts separate in-row and between-row spacing.

Why is the answer conservative?

Real rectangles, borders, supports, and access do not always pack perfectly.

Can I use seed-packet spacing?

Yes. Packet spacing for the cultivar and harvest stage is often the best local input.
